Report an Environmental Violation
The NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has uniformed police officers (ECOs) whose primary responsibility is to enforce state environmental laws and protect New York State’s fish, wildlife and natural resources. We need the public’s help to identify environmental problems.
Reports from citizens are vital for effective enforcement of New York's environmental laws. Detailed information ensures a prompt response to your complaint.
If you think you see an environmental violation, write or record the “who, what, where, when and how” of suspected violations, and then contact DEC. This will allow us to promptly respond to your complaint.
Or:
Call the DEC 24-hour telephone hotline to turn in poachers and polluters toll free at 1-844-DEC-ECOS (1-844-332-3267). Callers may request to file a complaint anonymously.
Contact the ECO who patrols your area for common complaints, such as burning, dumping, spills, hunting and fishing violations.
